Simply known as Shakira, the Columbia-born singer entered the English- speaking market with the release of her first album “Laundry Service” in 2001. The album, which featured the hit singles “Whenever, Wherever”, Underneath Your Clothes” and “Objection”, sold over 13 million copies worldwide. The album’s success established her presence in the pop music scene.
In 2005, Shakira released her first English album “Oral Fixation 1” that included the singles “La Tortura”, “No” and “Dia de Enero”. It sold over 5 million copies worldwide. The second English album “Oral Fixation 2” was also released late the same year and featured the hit singles “Don’t Bother” and “Hips Don’t Lie”, which reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
In 2006, Shakira received the most nominations at the MTV Music Video Awards but only went home with the Best Choreography award. In the 2007 Grammy Awards, she was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration together with rapper Wyclef Jean. Shakira did not win but she did perform the Grammy-nominated song “Hips Don’t Lie Featuring Wyclef Jean”.
